The club was started in 1965 as the "Turquoise Club" by a small group of friends who happened to like the colour turquoise. Our club nights were held in the Clubroom at the Swan and Sugar Loaf in South Croydon. The age range of the club at that time was 20 to 40 years. We had an active programme attracting many young people as there were few social clubs at that time.

We have lost all the original members, sadly some have died.

In 1974 our clubroom was changed to The Star in West Croydon and we were charged only one pound a night by the landlord. We lasted there only two years and then moved to the Blacksmiths Arms in South Croydon where we stayed for 20 years.

In 1978 we changed the name of the club to the "Good Companions Social Club" and withdrew the age limits, so we allowed anyone of any age to join. At that time the youngest was aged 11 and the oldest was aroung 80. We never enquire about people's ages or discriminate against them because of age or for any other reason. All people are welcome.

Around 1984 we had a thriving club and had 94 members, (we never reached 100).

In 1996 we had to move from the Blacksmiths Arms, as the pub closed down and was later opened as "O'Neils" and it has since changed its name again.

The Club moved its regular meeting place back to the Swan & Sugar Loaf pub but due to its closure in 2010, we moved again. We then moved to The Half & Half bar in the High Street, South Croydon.

The place closed in September 2015 and from that then we moved to the Royal Standard pub in Sheldon Road, Croydon.
